What are the options to relieve Back and Leg Pain?

1. Axial Low Back Pain

This is the most common type of back pain and is confined to the lower back only. It can be sharp or dull pain but can impede your ability to stand or walk. Doing certain physical activities can make it worse along with sitting for long periods of time. The muscles are usually inflamed and tighten, causing the feeling of soreness and tenderness. In many fortunate cases, it is a short lived pain that can last from 6 to 12 weeks.

In more advanced cases, the axial low back pain is caused from the facet joints in the spine. Small nerves called medial branch nerves become irritated and compressed, thus, recreating a facet referred pain pattern that radiates into the low back, buttocks, and sometimes that upper part of the leg. Physical Therapy and Decompression Therapy, Nerve Blocks, Radiofrequency Nerve Ablation, and Stem Cell Therapy successfully treat low back pain in our practice every day.

2. Lumbar Radiculopathy

Also known as sciatica, this is the second most common type of pain found in the lower back region. Unlike axial pain, a lumbar radiculopathy is caused by conditions in your body that compress the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve. Many patients are diagnosed with a disc herniation, spinal stenosis, osteophytes and degenerative disc disease(DDD). The severe pain is found to be more in the leg than the low back itself. Along with pain, numbness or weakness can occur also in the buttock, leg, and foot.Therapeutic Injections and in some cases back surgery (Endoscopic Microdiscectomy) successfully relieve back/leg pain in our practice every day.
