DEGENERATION OF THE SPINE

As we age our spines experience degeneration.
Luckily we can help treat the pain caused by this.

Spondylosis/Spine Arthritis

Spondylosis refers to degeneration of the spine and means that one has both pain and spine degeneration, regardless of what is causing the pain or where the degeneration is occurring. Spondylosis is when one vertebra slips forward over the one below it.

This condition occurs as a consequence of the general aging process in which the bones, joints, and ligaments in the spine become weak and less able to hold the spinal column in alignment.

What is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis is a general term for degeneration of the spine. This term is generally used to refer specifically to arthritis of the spine, or spinal osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, or degenerative arthritis, refers to inflammation resulting from the age-related breakdown of the cartilage that cushions the joints. Weight bearing joints like those of the spine are most commonly affected.

Symptoms of Spondylosis

This arthritic condition may result in spinal deformities, restricted mobility, and pressure on nerve roots and possibly on the spinal cord. If severe, it may cause pressure on nerve roots with subsequent sensory and/or motor disturbances, such as pain in the neck and low back, paresthesia, or muscle weakness in the limbs.

When the space between two adjacent vertebrae narrows, compression of a nerve root emerging from the spinal cord may result in radiculopathy (sensory and motor disturbances, such as severe pain in the neck, shoulder, arm, back, and/or leg, accompanied by muscle weakness).

Less commonly, direct pressure on the spinal cord (typically in the cervical spine) may result in myelopathy, characterized by global weakness, gait dysfunction, loss of balance, and loss of bowel and/or bladder control.
