Annular Disc Tear

Annular disc tears are spinal conditions in which a disc cushioning the bones of the spine, or vertebrae, tears suddenly or over time. As the outer portion of the disc is torn, the inner, soft portion protrudes, often causing pain.

What is an annular disc tear?

An annular tear is the tearing of the exterior of an intervertebral disc. These discs support the bone structure of the spine, but can tear when a disc is subjected to excess stress. As a person ages and their back and neck are subjected to more wear and tear over time, annular tears are more likely to occur. Different types of tears, with different levels of pain, can also be caused by traumatic injury to the intervertebral disc.
