Neck Pain

Experiencing neck pain can mean an issue with tendons, muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues located in that area. Highly sensitive nerves, small joints, or spinal discs could also be the cause of the pain you are suffering. Neck and arm, including shoulder pain, is extremely common and the pain can vary in its severity.

Neck Pain

There are many causes of neck pain including every day wear and tear, sports injuries, auto accidents, poor posture and repetitive motions. To help understand pain and how it is generated, the types of neck pain are classified into two categories, axial neck pain and cervical radiculopathy (pain referred from the neck down the arm). It is common for patients to have both axial neck pain and cervical radiculopathy.

What are the options to relieve Neck Pain?

1. Axial Neck Pain

This is the most common type of neck pain and is confined to the neck and sometimes the shoulder. It can be sharp or dull pain but can impede your ability to do perform activities of daily living. Doing certain physical activities can make it worse along with using a computer or driving or long periods of time. The muscles are usually inflamed and tighten, causing the feeling of soreness and tenderness. In many fortunate cases, it is a short lived pain that can last from 6 to 12 weeks.

In more advanced cases, the axial neck pain is caused from the facet joints in the spine. Small nerves called medial branch nerves become irritated and compressed, thus, recreating a facet joint referred pain pattern that radiates from the neck and also can refer to the trapezius muscles and down to the shoulder. Physical Therapy and Decompression Therapy, Nerve Blocks, Radiofrequency Nerve Ablation, and Stem Cell Therapysuccessfully treat neck pain in our practice every day.

2. Cervical Radiculopathy

This the second most common type of pain found in the neck and arm region. Unlike axial pain, a cervical radiculopathy is caused by conditions in your body that compress the nerve roots exiting from the cervical spine. Many patients are diagnosed with a disc herniation, spinal stenosis, osteophytes and degenerative disc disease(DDD).

The severe pain is found to be more in the arm than the neck itself. Along with pain, numbness or weakness can occur also in the shoulder, arm and down to the fingers. Therapeutic Injections and in some cases neck surgery (disc replacement) successfully relieve neck/arm pain in our practice every day.
